MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State did not have to look very far to find Mike Campbell’s replacement.
Working side-by-side with Campbell for the past decade, Avery Swinson was the perfect fit and, at the beginning of July, Swinson took over as Walters State’s new Associate Athletic Director as well as the Director of Student Development and Engagement.
“I would like to thank Derek Creech and Angi Smith for the opportunity and their support during this transition,” Swinson said. “From my very first day at Walters State, I have been the benefactor of wonderful mentors. Mike Campbell, the former Associate AD, is someone who has always been generous with his knowledge, encouraged me to challenge myself and been a great example of how to do things the right way.”
A native of Claiborne, TN, Swinson is very familiar with Walters State as she graduated from there, obtaining her associate degree in Psychology. Swinson would go on to get her bachelor’s degree and master’s at ETSU and returned to Walters State in 2005. Swinson took a job initially in the office where she worked as a Senators Page, the student ambassador organization, when she was a student.
Most recently, she has served as the Director of Admissions and Enrollment Development at Walters State while also working on getting her Doctorate at ETSU. She hopes to finish in the Spring of 2022 with her dissertation topic being about student engagement and community college athletes.
In her new role, Swinson will be working with both student and academic affairs on student development and programming. On the athletic side, she will be responsible for eligibility and compliance.
“At Walters State, we have such a strong history of success both in and out of the classroom,” Swinson said. “I am excited to be a part of that long-standing tradition and help our student-athletes develop into leaders that positively impact their communities.”
Walters State Athletic Director Derek Creech knew it was no brainer to fill Campbell’s spot with Swinson and is excited work alongside her on the athletics side of the job.
“We are excited to officially add Avery to our athletic staff as Associate Athletic Director,” Swinson said. “Avery has been indirectly involved with Walters State athletics for many years and is versed in all areas of our department. She will be a great addition to our athletics family.”
Swinson said that her favorite memories since beginning at Walters State have been celebrating students at graduation.
As for a goal in her new role, Swinson said they are the same as those in the athletic department.
“My main goals are really shared goals that we have within the athletics department: To support the holistic student-athlete experience and develop student-athletes to meet their highest academic, athletic and personal potential,” Swinson said.
In her free time, Swinson said she enjoys reading and is a lover of all things sports.
