An auto accident with injuries at mile marker 16 of Interstate 81 south in Hamblen County early Saturday morning resulted in significant traffic delays.
According to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway patrol at 5:25am Saturday, a tractor trailer out of Little Rock, Arkansas, struck a tractor trailer out of Brooklyn, New York in the rear. The second semi was carrying a load of vehicles. Both the first semi and the trailer of the second semi caught fire. Both were destroyed along the load of vehicles.
The driver of the first tractor trailer was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center. The driver of the second semi-truck was transported to Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System via EMS.
Interstate 81 was re-opened in that area by 3pm Saturday.
