The General Federated Somo Sala Circle is sponsoring the Fire Truck Chili Lunch to raise funds to continue the restoration of Morristown’s First Fire Truck.
The fire truck will be on display for the public during the chili lunch. Firemen will be on hand to answer questions about the worthy project and to help Somo Sala Circle members serve the Fire Truck Chili.
The lunch is $8 per person at First Presbyterian Church in Morristown from 11 to 2 p.m. Guests can dine in or place a “take out” order.
The First Fire Truck Fund is a 501(c)3 organization restoring Morristown’s first motorized fire engine, a 1916 American LaFrance.
After years of being on display, and exposed to the elements at Cherokee Park, the fire engine was placed in storage until a team of local firefighters endeavored to save it.
The fire engine has been disassembled and rust damage repaired.
The wheels were reconditioned by Coker Tire and tires were purchased, making the fire engine a rolling chassis.
Body parts have been sandblasted and are ready for painting.
The project is making progress, but there is still much work to be done.
Funds are still needed for completion of the project and one hundred percent of all donations go toward the restoration. The fire engine will be used by the Morristown Fire Department to promote fire safety.
All of the proceeds from the lunch will go to the First Fire Truck Fund.
